Obama wins Nobel peace prize, Gore green with envy.

Congratulations Mr. Obama apparently the Norwegeians caught the hope and change fever and reduced the Nobel peace prize to a set of promises.  At least Gore (sort of) made a movie (8.0 on IMDB, well done) despite being debunked along with the "experts" at the international climate change counil. At least Arafat once attempted to seek peace even if it was after waging terror on innocent civilians.  Today's winner fittingly shocked observers because while he has not accomplished anything YET, he has fantastic potential.  Why the shock? The Norwegeian commitee consists primarily of politicians representing political leanings of Norway's parliament, a body with strong socialist ties.

Still, the peace prize has often landed into the hands of people leaving a mark on histry. Men like Gorbachev deserve all the recognition in the world for dismantling one of the most oppressive regimes the world has seen by simply believing in personal liberties.  Lech Walesa stood up against this same oppressive regime and fought for freedom despite overwhelming danger.  Eli Weisel has shared and informed the world about his heart wrenching experience in hopes people never forget about the Holocaust, apparently some in Iran and Mel Gibson's dad failed to get the message.  Mother Theresa helped the entire world with her never ending generosity and has become the new face of benevolence.  Martin Luther King Jr. faced mind boggling adversity and willingly risked his life to fight for his beliefs in a segregated America ushering in profound change.  Many more are equally deserving of recognition and many more have gone unrecognized, after all it is difficult to pick just one worthy individual a year.

Yet all those people who have accomplished such great things are now joined by individuals whose only accomplishment is propaganda and campaign promises.  Even Jimmy Carter whose humanitarian demagoguery brought down the Shah of Iran received a peace prize, but he did so in 2002 almost 30 years after his presidency.  The committee has now cheapened and trivialized this great honor undermining the aura of the prize and all it's previous recipients.   Nothing destroys a movement or an effort faster than politics and regrettably, it would appear that the Nobel Committee has fallen into the same trap.

By selecting an individual whose accomplishments include winning a presidency and signing a stimulus package the peace prize's significance ceases to exist.  A man who is currently in control of two wars with no end in sight seems like a very peculiar selection.  Good job Nobel Committee you have given Obama the one thing he already has plenty of;  misplaced self confidence.  Hell, even SNL figured out Obama's accomplishments include jack and squat.
