Obama Lincoln comparison, a closer look on President's day.
In light of President's day I would like to entertain you with a slightly closer look at the comparisons being made between our current president and the much accomplished Abraham Lincoln. I found the comparison to be extremely off-putting as I failed to see any comparison other than state origin and perceived "inexperience" in Congress.
For starters, Honest Abe got into politics at the tender age of 23. In the next 17 or so years Abe served in the state legislature, taught himself law, passed the bar and according to most sources became a reputable lawyer. Lincoln toured with Zachary Taylor supporting his presidency bid where he actively participated by giving speeches for crowds and learning about the process. Not to be forgtten, he was also a captain of the Illinois militia although did not experience action.
Obama on the other hand experienced drugs at Occidental College, ended up in Columbia where he apparently was not a very good student, his transcript was never released. After Columbia he took a trip to Pakistan and other foreign places, got into Harvard where he was the president of Harvard Law Review - but had no pieces of literature to his name. Instead of practicing law like most presidents of the HLR he instead ended up in Chicago and trained in the ways of Saul Alinsky where he organized communities, he did use his lawyer skills on behalf of ACORN to sue banks for not lending to risky lenders. No military or war experience required for Obama, as that would probably tarnish his fragile mental and physical composition.
"A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided.
It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new — North as well as South."
In the late 1850s, Honest Abe was instrumental in forming and starting the Republican party. In retrospect probably a very serious achievement considering the Grand Ol' Party is one of the only two major parties in the United States. Abe then used his great oratory ability to fight against slavery, but much more importantly for the country. He believed that slavery was an extremely divisive issue and felt that a country could not survive with split opinions, it would have to be either no slavery everywhere or slavery everywhere and I think he preferred the former.
Obama instead founded nothing, but in order to boost his political prowess built alliances with the likes of Jeremiah Wright where he was comfortable with the notion of Black Liberation Theology and the message of black racism and superiority. He wrote in his book that white people can just be downright mean and his sentiment towards white people leaves much to be desired. His supporters and acquaintances consist of Rashid Khalidi, William Ayers and possibly Louis Farrakhan. People whose primary objective is to topple and undermine the existing American way of life. Now as president, Obama is comfortable with dividing the country further by enabling Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to push their liberal agenda upon the American people. As demonstrated by the stimulus bill passed several days ago, it is quite clear that a house divided is perfectly suitable for the rookie President.
So Obama can hang portraits of Lincoln in the oval office and bask in the endless analogies all day long, but unfortunately when it comes to facts the comparison falls flat on it's face. In fact, Americans should reject this comparison as it significantly undermines the presidency and accomplishments of Abraham Lincoln. A man whose writings, speeches, letters and quotes will permanently be entrenched in this country's history - and his actions continue to speak volumes. It remains to be seen whether Obama can accomplish even a fraction of Lincoln's success and what legacy he will create. Up to this point all feeble attempts at making Obama seem grander and larger than what he truly is will only be met with skepticism and will only serve to hurt him in the eyes of thinking Americans.
